Sklice Lotion, a prescription head lice medicine, is the only FDA-approved treatment with the active ingredient ivermectin. Sklice Lotion has been studied in children 6 months of age and older. Clinical studies have shown Sklice to be effective in killing live lice when applied properly. The studies have also shown, lice which hatch after treating with Sklice were unable to feed and die within 24 hours. As these are based on clinical studies we strongly recommend follow up combing with the Lice Meister comb to remove the remaining nits(eggs).
As we understand some parents would prefer to use a non-pesticide treatment shampoo we have found the Lice MD to be the most effective. LiceMD Pesticide Free offers a real alternative to pesticide lice treatments
+ LiceMD is pediatrician tested and effective in getting rid of lice and eggs. What’s more.
+ LiceMD uses a synthetic lubricant which makes comb-out smooth and easy, even for long, thick or curly hair.
+ Dimethicone, the primary ingredient in LiceMD, is used as a conditioning agent in many top selling shampoos and has a well-known safety profile. LiceMD is clear, fragrance free and non-irritating to skin.
A new product, Ulesfia, contains benzyl alcohol and is available only by prescription. It is the newest option for head lice treatment, and we are very pleased with the results our clients have experienced so far. It is a non pesticide, and the manufacturer indicates that it may be used on small children. They advise pregnant and nursing mothers to consult their doctors before using it. As a precaution, we hesitate to recommend any product until it has been in use for a time to be certain it is safe to use. We also believe the recommended amount is excessive, so we suggest using the treatment twice at a lower dose, saving the remaining product from the first application for the second treatment, which should occur ten days after the first. Because the product is so new, not all doctors are aware that Ulesfia is an option, and pharmacies may not have a supply readily available.
We believe the OTC lice killing shampoos are a reasonably safe and effective treatment option for most people. Those with severe allergies may want to avoid these products as they contain botanicals from the chrysanthemum flower. If one chooses to use this product or any similar lice killing shampoo, we recommend following the directions on our FAQ’s page rather than the ones supplied with the product. We make a distinction between lice killing shampoos and lice killing conditioners (Nix either its generic equivalent, or in prescription strength). We recommend only the shampoo products.
